The Thomson House, Buff, Straub, & Hensman (1958). Featured on the rear cover and pages 50-55 of Donald Hensman’s book Buff & Hensman, this 1958 Post & Beam is an important example of early Southern California modernism The home was the Winner of Pasadena’s 2012 Preservation Award for its meticulous restoration. Virtually every surface was restored or re-built to exacting detail. The two-story glass and wood pavilion is located within the Poppy Peak Historic District in the San Rafael Hills of Pasadena, offering mountain and city views. Enclosed by sliding translucent screens, reminiscent of Japanese shoji screens, the sleeping quarters on top open to the space below. With a exterior through its 2-story wall of glass, almost every room overlooks mountain and city views. A seamless addition of a fourth bedroom and en-suite bathroom were added where the original workshop was once located underneath the carport, thus the exterior footprint has not been altered. The property also features expansive decks, patio and lush landscaping. The home retains Mills Act status, offering annual tax savings to the current owner.
